How it all began
In 1995, Sara Mannix worked for Reliable Racing, a ski racing mail order company as their Director of Marketing, working with a webmaster out of Albany to develop their website. When it was completed, Sara asked "How do we get on the top of the search engines?" and he replied "that's up to you, no one knows how to do that". This was prior to Danny Sullivan's launch of Search Engine Land, so Sara was on her own and started testing different theories and ways of making websites found on the web in early 1996. By 1997, Sara Mannix had figured it out! Mannix Marketing handled the marketing for a hospitality corporation and had their website coming up Number 1 for virtually every keyword related to Lake George and lodging. Mannix Marketing showed the computer networking consultant that we had mastered "search engine optimization" and he started telling every business that they consulted for that Mannix Marketing was born to help businesses "get found on the web".

SEO is an investment, as it is a slower process that typically results in long-term placements within the search engines, especially when combined with a regular schedule of maintaining and updating your site. The search engines are constantly changing, therefore it is imperative that you stay on top of the latest trends, algorithms updates and industry standards. Local Community Guides
As most of the Mannix Marketing clients were hospitality clients in the Lake George Region, in 1998, we developed our first community portal to help our clients get found: LakeGeorgeNewYork.com. LakeGeorgeNewYork.com ranked Number 1 for every possible keyword related to Lake George however, our clients were getting the even more referral traffic from a site with no ranking: LakeGeorge.com - the intuitive nature of the geodomain meant that people were just typing it in, circumventing the search engines. It took a while to get up the courage to spend what seemed like a fortune on this site but with a local businessman's encouragement (Scott Flagel) - in 2001, we took the leap, took out a loan and purchased LakeGeorge.com.
LakeGeorge.com changed our business model. Though top search engine placement is critical for clients that compete globally. We learned about the power of geodomains and niche local portals for local search. Local search is when users are targeting businesses in a geographically constrained location. In other words this is the marketing that matters most for businesses that market a destination or that market to consumers within a certain region.
Saratoga.com was then purchased in 2002 and launched as a portal to Saratoga County and Saratoga Springs in January of 2003. Albany.com was purchased in 2003 and launched the following year in 2004, Adirondack.net purchased and launched in late 2006 and CliftonPark.com was purchased in 2008 and launched in late 2009.
