SMO Overview

SMO stands for "Social Media Optimization" and includes activity on a variety of socially interactive sites, such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Yammer, StumbleUpon and others. In the world of social media, the limits are endless as to how many people you can interact with and establish relationships with. It is these relationships in combination with catchy and relevant updates that compell people to click on the links you post.

Seeing the value in Social Media Optimization, Mannix Marketing's SEO team recognized the need for a workable SMO strategy that could be implemented and tracked for progress. In January 2009, we began to invest heavily in SMO for our own website, regional city guides and corporate blog - using budurl and other stats applications to assess our campaign's success.


Results of Social Media Optimization Plan

  • Clicks: With our tracking programs, we can see exactly how many people clicked on each link we post to a social media site. In budurl alone, we saw that 110 links received over 3,000 clicks! Some links receive more clicks than others, and it's not uncommon to see a single link get 100 clicks or more.
  • Search Engine Placements: SMO was another piece to the SEO pie, contributing to higher search engine placements for niche keywords due to increased quality backlinks on these sites.
  • Traffic: While traffic steadily increases across all of our sites with each season, we saw noticeably higher traffic levels for pages that were promoted via SMO in comparison to those that weren't. In fact, for January and February 2009, Twitter and StumbleUpon were among the top 3 referrers for our blog (our own homepage ranking in at number 2). We anticipate traffic to continue increasing as we strengthen our brand with SMO.
  • Networking: Aside from stats and figures, Mannix Marketing benefited from valuable business relationships, which developed through social media communications. Increased advertising inquiries and leads will likely lead to even more future business for the company.

Campaign Summary

Even in the early stages of SMO implementation, we have seen tremendous and obvious growth in several different areas across our sites. Watching our stats to see which pages are most viral or interesting to social media users has helped us hone in on ways to increase SMO productivity throughout the campaign. One of the most valuable aspects of running an SMO plan is easily overlooked: developing new relationships with potential clients. We are quickly reaping the benefits of SMO after just 2 months of active implementation. It's easy to see why Social Media Optimization is currently the fastest-growing area of online marketing.
