A while back, every domain name each had a different IP address, but with the accelerated increase of domain names and websites needed along with the finite number of IP addresses, hosting companies began to share IPs.

What Is A Dedicated IP Address?

So, now you are asking, "What is a Dedicated IP Address?" A dedicated IP address is set aside specifically for one domain, like it used to be done. If someone types in the numeric form of the IP address the same domain will always appear in the browser as it would appear if the domain name were typed in. Usually dedicated IP addresses are used for larger websites or websites needing secure e-commerce. Although, shared IP is usually easier and cheaper, here are three specific advantages to having a dedicated IP address for your website:

  • Using a private SSL certificates for accepting credit cards online. Web hosting companies that offer SSL certificate usually offer a shared SSL certificate where users can share the web host's SSL. If you are using your web host's SSL you don't need a dedicated IP.
  • Anonymous FTP for sharing files on the Internet. Anonymous FTP means a computer will allow anyone using FTP to access a directory for shared file usage. This is called Anonymous FTP because the user name used to sign in is "anonymous." Most hosts require a dedicated IP for this to work.
  • Setting up your own Domain Name Server. If you want to set up your own name server, ex. NS1.MySite.com, you will need a dedicated IP.
